What should I do?
Exercising when pregnant is about choosing what you are comfortable with. You should aim to complete 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise – this is a good goal for everyone to set, even if you aren’t always able to complete this because of time or physical limitations. If you are just starting with exercising again, or for the first time, you may prefer to try it for 10 minutes and build up to 30 minutes. Set yourself a target and see how this changes as you exercise more.
Importantly, make sure you enjoy the exercise you are doing. Try new classes – are there antenatal exercise classes in your area? Swimming is a great way to exercise when pregnant as it is low impact and benefits cardiovascular health, increases strength and blood circulation. If you are attending a class, ensure you tell the person leading the class that you are pregnant and how many weeks along you are – they should also be able to give you advice on suitable exercises and any modifications that might help you.
