What will I need to give myself injections?
Insulin is mainly administered using insulin pens containing insulin cartridges and tiny disposable needles. Injections are easy and relatively painless and generally much better than the syringes and needles of the past.
There are two main types of insulin pens:
- Some use replaceable cartridges (small containers of insulin). These come in two sizes, 3 ml and 1.5 ml, with the 3 ml size by far the more common.
- Pre-filled insulin pens; these use non-replaceable cartridges and must be disposed of once all the insulin in the cartridge has been used
The video below, produced by NHS Imperial College Healthcare Trust, gives more useful information on how to inject insulin.
