Sick day guidance

You may already know about the rules known as ‘sick day guidance’, but here is a reminder:

Rule no. 1

Test your blood glucose regularly and test your ketone levels if your blood glucose is over 13 mmol/L or if you aren’t feeling well.

Rule no. 2

Never stop taking your insulin if you feel unwell. You may need to take an increased dose.

Rule no. 3

If you don’t feel like eating proper meals, try to have something that contains carbohydrate, such as ice cream, Lucozade, or custard.

Rule no. 4

Drink plenty of water.

Rule no. 5

Test for ketones and take action if over 0.6.

Rule no.6

Get help if you aren’t sure what to do or if your blood glucose is high and you have ketones.
