Risk factors for gestational diabetes
Risk factors for gestational diabetes include:
- Being overweight (having a Body Mass Index (BMI) more than 30 kg/m2)
- Having had a previous big (over 4.5 kg) baby (also called macrosomia)
- Having had gestational diabetes during a previous pregnancy
- Having a family history of diabetes in a first-degree relative
- Being in a high-risk ethnic group e.g.
- South Asian (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh)
- African/Caribbean
- Middle Eastern
