Risk factors for gestational diabetes include:

  • Having had a previous big (over 4.5 kg) baby (also called macrosomia)
  • Having had gestational diabetes during a previous pregnancy
  • Having a family history of diabetes in a first-degree relative
  • Being in a high-risk ethnic group e.g.
    • South Asian (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh)
    • African/Caribbean
    • Middle Eastern
