The digestive system
People with diabetes are more likely to have gastrointestinal problems than people without diabetes; although this is a rare complication. It is caused by damage to the gut nervous system as a result of long-term high blood glucose levels.
The main symptoms are heartburn, indigestion, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and incontinence. These symptoms do have other common causes, so you should not automatically assume they are a direct result of diabetes and may need other investigations. If you have any concerns you should talk to your diabetes care team.
Diabetes and Dental Health
Problems with the teeth aren’t a complication of diabetes as such, but if your blood glucose levels are regularly too high, this can cause issues. Your mouth is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and germs. Germs will feed on high glucose in the blood supply to your mouth.
Any tooth decay or problems such as gum disease or abscesses can be more difficult to treat if you have diabetes. You should take extra good care of your teeth, brushing and flossing twice daily and seeing your dentist regularly for check-ups. Avoiding sweet things and keeping your blood glucose stable should help keep your teeth healthy.
