Depressants/downers

Depressants/downers

Examples include:

  • Heroin, morphine, benzodiazepines,

You’ll feel:

  • Relaxed, blissed out, less inhibited, and relieved of pain and anxiety.

You might experience:

  • Hallucinations, nausea, vomiting, slurring, lack of coordination, confusion, drowsiness, constipation, itching, lack of appetite, lack of sex drive, unable to get an erection. These are very addictive and have a high risk of overdose, which is likely to end in a coma or even death. Because of how addictive they are, you can also get very bad withdrawal symptoms after using them a few times.

You should be concerned about:

  • These drugs themselves can interfere with blood glucose levels, increasing your risk of going very high or very low.
  • You probably won’t be able to tell what your blood glucose is doing because of the other effects of the drug.
  • Loss of appetite puts you at risk of a hypo if you don’t eat.
  • You might also forget to take any insulin, increasing your risk of going into diabetic ketoacidosis.
