Calculating your risk

Calculating your risk

The first step to prevention is to find out what your risk of developing type 2 diabetes is. If you’re aged between 40 and 74 and live in England, you may be eligible for an NHS Health Check.

This service is designed to spot early signs of health conditions such as stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and dementia. As we age there is a greater risk of developing a serious health condition so by attending a health check, you can find out how you can reduce your risk.

You can also use the ‘Know Your Risk’ tool on the Diabetes UK website to understand your own risk of developing type 2. You will be asked a series of questions to determine whether your risk is low, increased, moderate or high. To complete this assessment please click the image below:

Levels of risk

The levels of risk for developing type 2 diabetes include:

Low: One out of twenty will develop type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years. It’s great that you are at low risk, just make sure that you are keeping an eye on the risk factors that you can control.
Increased:One out of ten will develop type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years. Look at which risk factors are increasing your risk and what you can do to reduce it.
Moderate: One out of seven will develop type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years. It’s a good idea to visit your GP as soon as you can to discuss the changes you need to make and what support there is to help you.
